Blood Sugar Supplements With Berberine: What Is Known and What Is Not

Quick answer

Blood sugar supplements berberine is a popular search, yet NCCIH says only weak evidence exists for berberine, as for chromium and cinnamon. Glyco Defender drops contain no berberine. The label lists chromium at 7 mcg and a 15.47 mg blend of 21 other ingredients. Ask your pharmacist about medicine interactions.

What does NCCIH say about berberine for blood sugar?

NCCIH says there is only weak evidence for berberine. It puts it in a short list with chromium, cinnamon and alpha-lipoic acid (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements).

It adds that most supplements have no evidence of benefit, and that medical treatment should never be replaced with an unproven product. "Weak" means limited studies that do not settle the question.

Is there berberine in Glyco Defender?

No. Berberine is not on the Glyco Defender label. The label lists chromium plus a blend of 21 ingredients, and berberine is not among them.

Check the Supplement Facts yourself. The bars show how far the label sits from studied doses for four listed ingredients. Details are on the Glyco Defender ingredients page.

Red bars: what one daily dropper can hold. Only chromium has a printed amount; for blend ingredients the chart shows an even split (15.47 mg / 21, about 0.74 mg per mL) and the most the label order allows. Blue bars: the low end of daily amounts of that ingredient alone in studies, set to full width. Even the ceilings are slivers of the studied doses.

How does a berberine product compare with a multi-ingredient drop?

Can berberine and other blood sugar supplements interact with medicines?

Yes, supplements for blood sugar can interact with medicines. The ADA warns that some cause low blood sugar next to diabetes drugs (ADA, Vitamins & Supplements).

That holds for any product with a glucose claim, berberine included. We have not found a source in our files that gives berberine interaction details, so ask a pharmacist about the exact product and your medicines.

Bring the bottle to the pharmacy, and keep taking prescribed medicine as directed.

Where does that leave a shopper choosing between products?

It leaves you comparing labels and costs, with a doctor's okay. Glyco Defender is sold on its official page with a 60-day money-back guarantee.

One bottle is $89. Three are $177 (about $1.97 a day) and six are $294 (about $1.63 a day).

FAQ01

Berberine questions

Does berberine lower blood sugar?

NCCIH lists berberine among a few supplements with only weak evidence for diabetes, and it finds no supplement proven to help. A product may be studied, but results are limited. Talk to your clinician before you try any berberine supplement.

Is berberine safe with metformin?

Ask your pharmacist. The ADA warns that supplements can add to diabetes drugs and cause lows. Keep taking metformin exactly as prescribed, and do not add or stop a product on your own.
